12/12/09 01:51 pm - [info]fanthropology - Media references to fanfic, the week ending 12/12/09

The Week surveyed published opinions on the 'Harry Potter Sex Scene,' including Nerve.com's James Brady Ryan's. Director David Yates calls the Harry Potter nude scene "intriguing" and "sexual," but in reality it just sounds like he "brought in a 15-year-old fan-fiction writer" to fiddle with the script.

In a piece on [info]ohnotheydidnt for Metro Canada, Rae McNamara wrote [Eli Roth] had a well-humoured reaction to discovering Inglorious Basterds gay fan fiction, suggestively taping a sign declaring his love of ONTD to his hairy chest.

Finally, how did I not know Robert Jordan had died? In Lincoln (NE) Journal Star, Michael Mason D'Croz had a piece about The Gathering Storm, an authorized continuation of the Wheel of Time series credited to Jordan and local writer Brandon Sanderson. Sanderson, a fan of the series before he came onboard, was able to write the ultimate fan fiction.

12/12/09 12:56 am - [info]fanthropology - Canadian author assaulted by US border Patrol, left out in snowstorm in shirtsleeves

Bad news for attempting to get any authors across the border right now......

The Canadian author Dr. Peter Watts was arrested on charges of "assaulting a federal officer" after large groups of border patrol swarmed his car. refused to tell him why, refused his requests for legal council, and kicked and beat him. His story HERE, another story and means of contributing to his legal defense HERE.

The US border patrol, apparently thinking Canadians have anti freeze in their veins, graciously allowed him to be released in Canada the next night.... minus all his belongings, his phone, his car , his computer, his notepaper.. and his coat.
in a snowstorm
after public transit shut down
and without notifying Canadian police or anyone that maybe they should pick him up to keep him from freezing to death, hmmm?

he will have to travel BACK to the united states to deal with the federal assault charges, which could lead to him being fined, jailed, and banned from the US
i am sure that right now he finds the idea of never traveling across this border again to be such a loss.

Frankly, if this isnt dealt with, and fast, i rather expect to see a lot fewer authors willing to cross into the US to attend conventions and etc...

12/12/09 12:56 am - [info]fanthropology - Media references to fanfic, the week ending 10/17/09

Baltimore has a Comic-Con? Tricia Bishop, covering the con for the Baltimore Sun, reported that Jane Jetson was standing in line next to Poison Ivy talking about shoes, while a dozen people back, Willy Wonka was deciding whether she and Dr. Horrible, looming to her right, were officially dating. "Tentatively," she finally decided after several seconds' thought, though her true love may be the candy man. She said she wrote a 70,000-word fan fiction in his honor. "He's really complicated," said Hillary Henson/Wonka. "He's got an awesome back story."

[info]losyark pointed me to a list of the "25 Greatest Cult Shows Ever" on Entertainment Weekly. Supernatural was ranked 11th; Marc Bernardin wrote Why It's Cult: Because some members of the show's small but passionate fanbase have taken to writing fan fiction. Commenters pointed out that to choose a show because it's fic'd, and omit, of all possible shows, Star Trek, is just plain silly.

Lots of Twilight-related refs this week!

New York Magazine's Vulture blog, in a piece titled A Peek Inside the Shadowy World of Twilight Fan Fiction, linked to "Smut, Please"! The Fabulous Online Universe of 'Twilight' Fan Fiction, in Which Edward and Bella Get It On and On and On, by Natasha Vargas-Cooper for The Awl.

On E! Online, Jennifer Cady summarized dueling Twilight-related magazine covers as Robsten Fanfic Competition: People vs. OK!

And, on Examiner, Connie Ann Kirk wrote, of the new Twilight blank book set, Presumably, the set was put together as a gift or collectible item for the bookish Twilight fan who may wish to record thoughts, fan fiction, or try writing an original romantic story of her or his own.

Also on Examiner, the Buffalo Movie Examiner wrote, of Jennifer's Body, The best thing about the movie is the dynamic between the girls. They're "best friends" with a very gay vibe/undertone that will likely become a fanfiction category.

In the Guardian (UK), Jessica Lack profiled artist Dawn Mellor, inexplicably writing The series draws inspiration from slash fiction, an intriguing type of fan fiction written on the web that takes the main characters of films and novels and recasts them as gay – even Harry Potter, [Mellor] says. "There is a huge amount of fan fiction where the male leads are reappropriated as gay. The stories tend to be pretty sexy. There's also something called femslash, where women take female characters and create love stories about them." Mellor sees desire as a productive force, indeed as a more positive, empowering one than the caustic ravings of bloggers.

In a review of Glee in the Marysville-Yuba City, CA Appeal-Democrat, John Kendrix wrote But when the show isn't singing its heart out or throwing out a one-liner about writing "Desperate Housewives" fan fiction, it stumbles. Bad.

Both fanfic and LJ get mentions in a piece on John Smedley by John Funk on Escapist Magazine.

Finally, the Arkansas Democrat Gazette reports that Anime Club [will meet] from noon to 2 p.m. Oct. 24. Join us to watch an Anime program and have snacks as well as a chance to share your anime artwork, fanfiction or just chat with other fans. Teens, ages 11-18, and guests welcome to attend.

12/12/09 12:56 am - [info]fanthropology - Media references to fanfic, the week ending 9/12/09

Supernatural went there this past week, featuring a character who writes Wincest. This got a notice from Ken Tucker on Entertainment Weekly, who wrote She’s a ticklingly good creation by Kripke, hunched over her keyboard tapping out fan-fiction in which Sam and Dean are “husky-voiced” lovers.

My favorite ref was in the Ottawa Citizen. Jennifer Green profiled [info]amidala_thrace, who was born with a rare genetic disorder. The 23-year-old hosts online groups and writes fan fiction based on characters from Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica.

This week's no-cookie-for-you award goes to Christopher Bahn, who wrote, on A.V. Chicago (and other A.V.s), For most bands, television is anathema to creativity—a pressing reason to skip practice, or the sort of sucking vortex of slack that’s kept Kevin Shields from making another My Bloody Valentine record, for example. But just as some TV viewers cross the line from box-set-owning buffs to fan-fiction writing freaks, there are a few groups that base entire albums on what they’ve TiVoed.

On Slashdot, JR Peck reviewed Lev Grossman's The Magicians: So what sets The Magicians apart from lesser books that lift heavily from other works? Why is The Magicians a strong story while something like Eragon is a weak rip-off? I think it boils down to two elements. First is Grossman's strong writing. Even if this were just a big piece of fan fiction, it would be well written fan fiction. Secondly, this isn't just an homage to the work of others. While Grossman has lifted the settings and externals, the substance is completely different often to the point of taking a position that is completely antithetical to the original work.

On Examiner, Jessica Moore, commenting on the 10th anniversary of the release of Final Fantasy 8, wrote Visually, and at that point in time, this was the best-looking game for Playstation. The graphics were stunning, the FMVs were breathtaking, the dialogue was witty and stylized (Hot dogs, anyone? I thought so.), and the characters were for the most part memorable. Even Selphie made it as far as Kingdom Hearts, despite the fact that hardly anyone liked her. Rinoa has her own hate group, even after ten years. […] As for Squall and Seifer, the proof is in the fanfiction. No, I won’t link to any. I’m trying to keep this site rated “E for Everyone.”

Charlie Sheen wrote Sheen-Obama RPF; this got worldwide attention, with explicit fanfic refs by Mehret Tesfaye in the Ethiopian Review (Sheen then produces what could well be the start of a bold new offshoot of the traditional fanfic — the World Leader Comes Around to the Conspiracy Theory 99.9% of the Population Dismisses as Crackpot genre — weaving in sexy guest appearances by Osama bin Laden, Dick Cheney, FBI translator Sibel Edmonds and The New Yorker reporter Seymour Hersh along the way) and a number of blogs.

In Rhode Island College's The Anchor, Amanda Hooper wrote a how-to guide to fanfic writing, A creative outlet.

Finally, for the past weeks, it seems, the Swedish literary class has been arguing over what Swedish fiction should be. The hopefully-pseudonymous Charlotte Webb, joining the fray in the pages of The Local, wrote In my view, the most legitimate objections to the rather narrow minded proscriptions of the original manifesto are twofold. Firstly, it does seem both naïve and irrelevant in an age of acronyms, multi-clause sentences, instant messaging, digital poetry, hyperlink fiction, slam poetry, fan fiction, media saturation and translation (I assure you, the list just goes on), to attempt with such a dramatic degree of assumed authority to define the limitations of Swedish storytelling.
